Meeting 4 - Influence

1. Opening prayer or reflection

2. Minutes of last meeting

3. Review of happenings

What happened this week? It may be something that happened at work, or in the family. It may be a conversation or an article you read. Share about something that made you angry or happy or confused or depressed – something that really affected you.

    • What caused this to happen?
    • How did it affect the people involved?
    • What are the good and bad things about this happening?
    • What was your reaction/action?
    • Was that a good reaction? A responsible reaction?

4. The enquiry – Influence

Most people have a number of heroes and heroines in their life, people they look up to, people they admire, people that they are envious of, or would like to imitate. But these are not the only people who affect us. All with whom we come in contact have their influence on us. It is also true that we influence others. Often, we are unaware of our influence; our power to make others lives happy or miserable.

SEE

1. Talk about the people that you used to admire so much when you were at school. Do you admire them as much today?

2. Who are the people most admired by your friends today? In what ways do they influence your friends’ values and actions?

3. Are there some ‘ordinary people’ in our life, at home, in our village, or workplace, who have a lot of influence on people’s behaviour? Is their influence good or bad? In what ways?

JUDGE

1. Do you think that it is weak to be influenced by others or is it something that is very natural?

2. How do we choose the people we will allow to influence us?

3. What about our own power of influence? Are we responsibly aware of the enormous power we have to make others’ lives happy or miserable?

ACT

1. It is important that we be aware of the power that influence has on our lives. People’s actions do influence others and often this happens without either being very aware of what is happening.

2. This week take note of what is happening around you and be able to report at next meeting an example of somebody’s action that helped or hurt another person.

3. Take note also of how your own actions affect others with whom you come in contact during the week.

5. General business

Read and prepare next week’s enquiry topic.

Who will lead next week’s meeting – and who will be secretary?

During the week try talking about the next discussion topic with other

friends, at work or social occasions, to get their opinions.

6. Closing prayer and social
